Founder Members and Members of the Lodge

One of the Founder members was W.Bro. Joseph Randulph (Barrister).

Another Founder member was a Local man, Bro. Charles Saunders,Professional Vocalist residing at Park Gate, Rickmansworth Road, Watford, Herts. previous Lodge "The Incorporated Society of Musicians 2881.

The Saunders Family were well known in North Cornwall with several shoe shops, but above all being strict Wesleyan Methodists. When a lad, Charles' Father expressly forbade him to go anywhere the "Den of Iniquity", The Stratton Lecture Hall.

An International Tenor, he sang at the Royal Chapel, Hampton Court, toured all over the World and, on occasions, sang with Dame Clara Butt. In his autobiography entitled "Tale of a Tenor" he said "I went to a Masonic Meeting at The Prince Alfred Lodge in South Africa and saw a very interesting Ceremony. We returned to Durban and in the evening at the Port Na Tal Lodge I took my third degree, and am now a Master Mason. It was a very impressive Ceremony, and if a Mason lives up to his vows, he is a better Man in every respect. On the 2nd July 1896 in Bombay we were giving two more Concerts which had been arranged by the Masonic Fraternity. Last night I went to a Masonic Lodge in By Culle and saw Bros. Gould and Abbey take their 2nd Degree. After the ceremony we dined in the Lodge and it was funny to see two Great Rats running around the floor in which we were having Dinner.

Another well known Family were the King Family who were instrumental in the building of our Stratton Cottage Hospital, which was said to be the first Cottage Hospital in the Country. Dr. Arthur Thomas King was the first initiate on the 10th January 1910. He became the fifth Secretary in 1914 and Worshipful Master in 1917. He married Veronica Sabine Baring Gould, whose Father wrote a well known hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers". He was a Justice of the Peace and was a formidable man.

We had a very learned Member, an excellent ritualist, who came to the Lodge, Black Suit etc. wearing sandals with no socks.

Another well known and liked figure was W. Bro. Eric Trewin who invariably was late. We usually had sung the opening ode, and then the knock on the door, when everyone would say "We can now start, Eric has arrived".

We once had a W.M. who was short in stature and whose feet could not reach the floor once sat in the Masters Chair. Trouble was, that concentration on the ritual caused him to swing his legs with considerable vigor. It was a bit disconcerting to the Candidate, but he was an excellent Mason.

In 1987 Members were delighted to learn that W. Bro. David Dobson had been appointed a Member of the Honourable Society of Apothecaries which carries the Honour of being a Freeman of the City of London, and which according to ancient rights, entitles him ti drive a flock of sheep across London Bridge.

W. Bro. Vic Marsh a "Pop Star" in his own right who was popular some years back, along with his mate Mick Taylor. The Duo known as the Edison Brothers and were popular in the Netherlands and recorded a song on the RCA Label "Listen to me".
